Art & Antiques Magazine, June 2004 issue
– “After a successful commercial graphics career,
Beck embarked on a path as a self-taught sculptor and painter, and quickly rose
to immediate international acclaim. His bronze sculptures were honored by inclusion
in the Biennale Internazionale dell’ Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy,
last December. ‘My work is based on emotion and human relationships,’
Beck says. His figurative bronze sculptures reflect the influence of classical
realism and explore the intricacies of the human condition through fluid movement
and passionate expression.”
Prior to beginning a full-time career in sculpture in 2001, Beck worked as an illustrator, print and publication designer, and 3D computer animation creator. In 2000, after the death of his wife, Beck returned to fine art with a passion and dedicated himself to painting and for the first time, sculpting. Beck traveled Europe surrounding himself with the works of Renaissance masters. Self-taught, he spent the summer of 2001 sculpting in Florence, Italy, inspired by the city, it’s people, and timeless art treasures. Gregory was invited to represent the United States at the Biennale Internazionale dell' Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy, December 2003. This is a bi-annual exhibition held at the Fortezza da Basso. Participation in the Florence Biennale is by nomination only. Artists participating in the event are selected solely on the basis of the merit of their works, with no prejudices as to style, theme, or artistic movement. An international jury of nearly 50 art historians, world-renowned museum curators, and critics make the selection of artists. This exhibit features nearly 800 artists from 54 nations. Gregory featured three of his bronze sculptures at this exciting event. Beck’s detailed human anatomy is sometimes powerfully over-emphasized, drawing focus to the physical responses of the mind and emotions. His working knowledge of the human anatomy has eliminated the need for models. His sculpture, original drawings and paintings, along with major commissioned pieces are held in many private and corporate collections in the United States and Western Europe. |
